2014 Heartland Bighorn 3010RE
This 5th wheel came to us with four lead acid batteries, a single 135W solar panel, and a PWM solar charge controller. This wasn't enough to keep up with the electric refrigerator and other devices on frequent camping trips. So we removed the old equipment and added an all new off-grid solar system!
Four 200W solar panels were installed as well as a more efficient MPPT solar charge controller. The AC power wires were rerouted through the Multiplus inverter/charger, allowing the entire trailer to be powered when not plugged in to generator/shore power. An inverter control panel and battery monitor display were installed inside the trailer next to existing electrical control panel. The lead acid batteries were replaced at a later date with lithium iron phosphate batteries, allowing this trailer's electrical system to be truly maintenance-free.
These upgrades allow for all the electrical devices and outlets to be ready to use just with the flip of a switch. It also allows the air conditioner unit to be used to cool off for an hour or two without an electrical hookup. If needed, additional batteries and solar panels can be added in the future for even more off-grid power.
